Smith Strikes Again to Send USA to Gold Medal Olympic Final
The USWNT continued a string of strong performances with a 1-0 victory over Germany in the semifinal of the Paris Olympics. Germany made this a very physical game, with the two teams locked in a stalemate for the first 90 minutes. Early in extra time though, Sophia Smith picked up the baton from Trinity Rodman to score her own heroic and brilliant game winner in the 95th minute.
The USA continued to create golden opportunities throughout the extra 30 minutes, as Smith had two 1-on-1 chances saved by Berger. We were almost made to rue those misses as Germany had a massive chance of their own in the 119th minute. Alyssa Naeher came up with a massive save from a point-blank German header to preserve the lead and steal at least some of the headlines from Smith.
The game was extremely open for the first 10 minutes, but eventually settled into the more conservative, cagier match we’d anticipated. The US front 3 of Swanson, Smith, and Rodman looked capable of creating chances all match, and Naomi Girma and the rest of the back line played very well and limited German chances.
The problem was that the midfield was basically non-existent. Rose Lavelle started well, but faded as the match wore on. Horan and Coffey proved unable to a) stop Germany from literally dribbling right through midfield or b) advance the ball from the back line to the front 3 when the US had the ball. For long stretches they were outnumbered 2 to 3 in the center of midfield, but even factoring in that numerical disadvantage they still looked well off the pace of this match.
In the picture below, we’ve highlighted how we have literally no one in midfield. We have 5 up front and a massive gap from them to Dunn and/or Coffey. It’s no surprise we can’t get the ball to the attack.

Hayes brought on Lynn Williams in the 60th minute, after which the US began to play very direct, bypassing the midfield and looking for Williams with long balls out of the back. This was basically waving the white flag that we couldn’t play through midfield, underscoring our weakness in that part of the field today.
Fortunately, the prediction we made in our preview article proved spot on, and our excellent defense plus the Trident was able to carry the day. “We think Germany will play through our midfield easily when they do have the ball and will create chances on the counter. Girma and (hopefully) Davidson will have their hands full, but we think they can keep the German attack quieter than their defense can keep our front 3.”
Girma in particular kept their attack quiet, and the front 3 provided the breakthrough in the 95th minute. Mallory Swanson finally filled the extra space we had been leaving in midfield and picked up a good pass from Sam Coffey. Swanson then played a through ball to Smith, who scored a brilliant sliding goal, lifting it over the onrushing keeper to seal the victory.

attack momentum and match stats

individual performances
the good
Sophia smith (F, Woman of the Match)
In addition to her excellent goal, Smith’s full skill set was on display today. Her hold up play was fantastic, enabled by her world class first touch. She also came back to help on defense, covering multiple times for the undermanned and lethargic midfield. She had two other 1-on-1 chances with the keeper that we’d have liked to see her convert, but when you score a brilliant match winner in extra time you get two thumbs way up.
trinity rodman (f)
She looked very tired in extra time, alternately making excellent plays followed by terrible giveaways. We’ll forgive her though because she ran her ass off for the first 90 minutes. She was fantastic again, beating her defender 1-on-1 at least 4 times and often actually drawing a double team from German defenders. She also came back to win the ball multiple times. Our favorite play of hers though was when she flattened Hegering (Germany’s CB) after Hegering took a cheap shot going through Dunn’s back on a loose ball. Way to have your teammate’s back.
Side note…how refreshing is it to watch this clip and no one rolls around on the ground acting like they’ve been broken 17 bones?
Mallory Swanson (f, unsung hero award)
The Trident was 3-for-3 today, all having excellent games. Swanson was quiet for the first 75 minutes in our view, but sprang to life late on and looked like one of the only players who still had extra gas in the tank in stoppage time. Was very effective dropping into midfield to find space and then run at the German back line, like she did on the assist for Smith’s goal. Given we’ve had difficulty advancing the ball through midfield a few games in a row now, we’d like to see her (and Smith) do this more often going forward.
naomi girma (D)
Like Smith, Girma demonstrated the full breadth of her talent today, again staking a claim as the best defender in the world. In fact, we thought she was both our best defender and best midfielder in the same match. She won every ball in her area, covered up mistakes by Sonnett/the midfield, and hit a gorgeous through ball to Smith, the type of ball our midfield could only dream of. She went the full 120 again, remaining the only US outfield player to play every minute of every match.
the Bad
the starting midfield 3 (Lindsey Horan, sam coffey, Rose Lavelle)
We’ve already covered this above, so we won’t belabor the point, but they were played off the pitch by Germany today. Coffey was at least good on the ball when she was able to win it, but she and Horan just looked so slow compared to Germany, getting beat far too easily and leaving the back 4 exposed. We finally made some subs at the start of extra time, bringing on Nighswonger for Dunn (who also had been pushing up into midfield when we were in possession) and Albert on for Horan, and proceeded to dominate extra time.
We’ll let you pick which of these stats you find most persuasive on just how bad our starting midfield was:
1) Trinity Rodman had more defensive actions (interceptions, tackles, clearances) today than Coffey, Horan, and Lavelle combined.
2) Korbin Albert had as many defensive actions as the 3 of them combined despite having only 30 minutes of action.
3) Naomi Girma and Jenna Nighswonger both created more “big chances” from defense (1 each) than the starting midfield did (0)
Hayes needs to figure out midfield. It has been several games in a row we’ve left that area of the field undermanned and had to pass the ball around the back all game. When she pushes Lavelle and Horan up so high in attack that they are as high as the front 3, then Lavelle and Horan are basically wasted by standing next to Smith, Swanson, and/or Williams (as shown in the picture above). There’s not enough space for them to all operate, and then we are exposed in defense because they are already behind the play any time our opponent wins the ball.
Other Notes
Davidson came off at halftime with what appeared to be a reaggrevation of the knee injury that kept her out of the past two games. She was replaced by Sonnett again. After the game, when the rest of the subs ran onto the pitch to celebrate, Davidson walked out slowly. Not a great sign, we’d love to see her healthy against Brazil as we view her as a significant upgrade over Sonnett.
Emma Hayes seems exceptionally proud of the team. She uncharacteristically took to social media to praise the team. Saying “the pain cave in this team is so deep. Guts and heart are never underrated in my world. This is a special group of people and I am soooooooo impressed.” The quote was followed by 5 US flag emojis. We think it’s a smart move actually, given how important social media is to the generation of talent from which our team is comprised.
what's next
Brazil in the gold medal match! We’ll be favorites too. When this tournament started most American fans didn’t really know what to expect, and this is as good as anyone could have hoped for.
Brazil pulled off the shock of the tournament by beating defending World Cup champions Spain by a 4-2 scoreline. Spain had nearly 80% of the ball but failed to create a single “big chance” per the statisticians, while Brazil created 6. An expert display of counterattacking football. The US defeated Brazil in a competitive match in March, the final of the 2024 CONCACAF W Gold Cup. That was the team’s last game before Emma Hayes took over, and it looks like both teams have improved markedly since then. Saturday’s championship game will be quite the spectacle in Paris.

10.4 – Weekend Recap
The last match window before the USMNT all gather in Austin for Pochettino’s first camp was action packed.
Pulisic scored, and was Milan’s best player, again! It’s almost every game this year he’s been either the best player by the data or as voted by fans. …But we get some bad vibes from his teammates twice stripping him of the PK responsibility against the coach’s orders. Theo Hernandez and Tammy Abraham both had their PKs saved by David de Gea – so they probably should have let Pulisic, who is 10/10 in his career, take them.
September 2024 “team of the month”
This is basically how the USMNT would line up in our first matches under Pochettino – if he made his decisions based ONLY on current club form. He obviously won’t do that – but it’s a cool way to look at who is playing well, and who isn’t, for the USMNT.
